10 Movie Icons You Definitely Looked Up To If You Were A Teen In The 90’s

These fierce women legit changed your life

The 90’s were an awesome time for movies. Innocent fun, driven women and flawless casting, those were the good old days. Here is a reminder of the characters you loved and adored in the last decade of the 20th century.

1. Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone, Clueless)

Although she was technically a virgin who couldn’t drive, her amazing wardrobe and her sweet naiveté wrapped in hip and sarcastic humor made the perfect blonde girl from Beverly Hills pretty much everything you wanted to be. She had good friends, was invited to every party (even the ones in the valley!) and was rich to boot. Also, don’t even try to pretend you knew what sporadically meant before seeing this movie. As if!

2. Nancy Downs (Fairuza Balk, The Craft)

Granted, she was a little scary and had this butch-y vibe you didn’t necessarily cared for. She was however the ultimate weirdo in a cool way and couldn’t give a damn what people thought of her. Ambitious and driven, she was once the regular girl who got hurt by a boy (who hasn’t been?) She then adopted a gothic look and took matter into her own hands by studying magic, which is, I believe, the definition of badass.

3. Katarina Stratford (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You)

She really didn’t care about what you were saying about her. She was the feminist model you didn’t know you needed in your life. Clever and witty, you admired her repartee and the way she handled authority. She read Sylvia Plath and listened to punk rock like no one’s business. Also, she got Heath Ledger at the end, which is a major plus.

4. Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman)

She was just your regular, run of the mill, simple hooker. Look, no judgement, you do what you got to do to pay the rent. Even so, she remained herself in a lot of ways. She knew how to deal with all kinds of people and she never settled for less than what she deserved. And she deserved the whole package, like you do. Furthermore, who never dreamed of having the final word and finally shutting down the haters like she did to that shady shop assistant?

5. Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky, My Girl)

Funny and with hilarious one-liners, she probably was the coolest 11 year-old you’ve ever known. She was also resilient and strong, yet vulnerable at times. She was the only kid accepted in an adult summer class, because she was that smart. You admired her sassiness and her loyalty to her best friend, who she lost in a tragic way at the end… I’m not crying, you are.

6. Courtney Shayne (Rose McGowan, Jawbreaker)

The hottest villain of them all, Courtney was hands down the ultimate Queen Bee. She was the most popular of her school, and knew how to get respect. She looked flawless while she was bullying her peers, even killing her best friend (not on purpose, okay?!). Fierce and terrifying, she was the mean girl you secretly wanted to be. She maybe killed the teen dream, but she definitely was one hot murderess.

7. Romy White and Michele Weinberger (Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion)

Double the pleasure, double the fun! These two inseparable dim-witted best friends were the #friendshipgoals you were aspiring to have with your own friend. Fashionistas and shopaholics, they also came with great values; be yourself and don’t bother caring about what others think of you. They may not have invented the post-its and thought mono was the best diet ever, but they knew how to have fun in life and they invented a fat free diet, which included six days bingeing on gummy bears, jelly beans and candy corns. We wish we had their discipline!

8. Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar, Cruel Intentions)

She was the perfect combination of popular, beautiful, sexy and sociopath. A real feminist in her own way, she knew how to use her hotness to have what she wanted. She was the mean socialite with impeccable style. She played her cards right; parents loved her, girls wanted to be her and boys wanted to be with her, in that way. Yes, even her hot step-brother Sebastian. The gorgeous narcissistic bad girl used everyone for her own amusement, which we loved, although we would never want to be the object of her disdain and of anger.

9. Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt, I Know What You Did Last Summer)

Julie was the next door gal, natural and fun. Ok, she was part of a murderous foursome, but it was an accident and she felt really guilty about it. Then, it’s all downhill for her; we did however wish we were as good looking as her when we were depressed and way too pale. She wore the camisole like no one else and could run around for hours and still look fresh. Julie always felt persecuted and she loved playing the victim. Feel free to admit your teenage self was exactly like her.

10. Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon, Election)

Restless and overachieving, Tracy would stop at absolutely nothing to get what she wants. The girl is no stranger to sabotage and always ends up satisfied. With her cute hair and her always in-style clothing, she was determined and reeked of self-confidence. True, she was a republican, but she had in faith in what she believed and made cupcakes that looked totally delicious. Bonus!
